BARE-EYED PIGEON

The Bare-Eyed Pigeon columba corensis known locally as “Ala blanca” or “Barbacoa” or “Paloma di Mondi” in our local language of Papiamento. This bird feeds on fruits, millet and maishi chiquito. They fly very fast and will fly off at the slightest sound. The Bare-Eyed pigeon has a small light blue eye ring around an orange-brown eye which is then surrounded by a pronounced ring of black. As their color is a light grayish gray the dark circle around the eye is distinctive. They usually perch on top of cactus or mangrove trees and can sometimes be seen in large flocks flying off in the direction of Venezuela showing the stark white color under their wings.
