Magnificent Frigatebird

Magnificent Frigatebird

The Magnificent Frigatebird fregata magnificens called a “Skerchi” in our local language of Papiamento.  This large seabird has a distinctly forked tail along with its long wings.  You will often see them following fishing boats looking for the scraps thrown overboard.  They are excellent at catching their own fish but are often known for robbing other birds of their catch.  They will harass the other bird until it drops its catch and then they will catch it in midair.  They do not breed in Aruba but will roost in the high mangroves.  Light body weight and a 2 meter wingspan makes them amazing flyers and bandits of the sky.
