BROWN PELICAN

BROWN PELICAN

Our Brown Pelican pelecaus occidentalis or known in our local language Papiamento as “Pelicano” or “Ganshi” is the largest bird in the Antilles.  This bird feeds on fish with its enormous bill and spacious gular pouch.  You will see them diving from as high as 20 meters with their wings folded in to scoop up fish they have spotted.  Sometimes they will work in teams when there is a large school of fish available.  Brown Pelicans build their nests in the mangroves.  The chicks are fed by both parents with fish held in their gular pouch.
