Plants – Various Agave – Pita

In addition to these previously mentioned agave species, I also found in my research 5 other species listed.  Some of these agave species were brought to the ABC Islands by the Europeans many years ago for various purposes.  As our climate is perfect for these plants, they have adapted on their own and are a common site in the mondi (our open lands).

These plants are often called century plants in English.  However they do not live that long.  As the tall stalk grows to its maximum height, it will be full of yellow flowers.  These flowers attract insects, butterflies, birds and bats.  New shoots sprout from the flowers and when the stalk falls an abundant amount of tiny agave scatter to the ground.  If they hit the right spot of soil with a little moisture…voila another agave!
