Plants – Agave – Pita

Cuco di Indjan or Pita (Agave vivipara) is but one of the four different species of Agave present on Aruba according to Arikok National Park. These plants can hold water for long periods of time during a drought. They are frequently mistaken for a cactus as they are often growing right alongside cactus in the desert landscape.  However they are actually a cousin of the asparagus family.  After seven or eight years of growing in a rosette shape a few feet off the ground, it will suddenly sprout a huge stalk up to 6 to 10 meters high.  The stalk does look somewhat like a gigantic asparagus!
