Cactus – Stenocereus griseus – Yatu

Stenocereus griseus, known locally as Yatu and Mexican Organ Pipe in English, grows straight up and branches out close to the ground; its thorns make up neat rows of rosettes. This cactus can grow up to 9 meters with stems up to 12 centimeters in diameter. This cactus blooms at night and bears fruit during the dry season. It is a critical part of our island’s ecology feeding the bats, birds and other small animals. The fruit is edible and makes a great jam. Also it is often used for fences as it takes root exceptionally quick and grows very straight.
